Discussion: What Interests You?
Developmental theories and themes typically focus on one or more developmental constructs: cognitive, physical, or social-emotional development. These areas of development—sometimes identified as developmental processes—serve to categorize research and areas of specialization. It is important that you familiarize yourself with these constructs and the theories related to them in order to choose a theory that is appropriate for your professional needs. For example, which theory could help guide curriculum development in a school for musically gifted students? Which theory could help shape intervention for adolescents who abuse alcohol?
For this Discussion, you will analyze the constructs of developmental psychology as they relate to a topic of personal interest.
To prepare for this Discussion:
- Review the Learning Resources for this Discussion related to developmental psychology.
- Search the American Psychological Association (APA) website, the developmental psychology (DevPsy.org) website, the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD) website, or any other website related to developmental psychology and find an article that relates to one or more developmental constructs (i.e., physical, cognitive, or social-emotional) that is of interest to you. Make sure you search for something that is related to your interest in the field of developmental psychology.
By Day 4
Post a summary of the article and the construct being addressed. Provide an explanation of how this article/topic relates to your interest in developmental psychology. Further explain why you chose this construct over any other construct.
