Nurses can help a patient make immediate and permanent lifestyle
behavioral changes by first creating a safe environment where the patient feels
comfortable sharing their concerns and can identify the barriers that are
affecting their ability to make the change. Once identified, the nurse
and patient can systematically begin to address the barriers.
“One key factor in the ability to comply with health education
is financial constraints. The individual may not have the resources to pay for
medications or a proper diet or may not have transportation to appointments”
(Edelman, Kudzma, & Mandle, 2014, p. 220).
I have frequently contacted our outpatient social services
department for a list of community resources that can assist with financial and
transportation issues. Involving the patient in a plan to reach out to
the available resources and arranging follow up appointments with the provider
and social services helps set the stage for future planning and goal setting.
