Review a job description through a job website (e.g., Career Builder, Monster, etc.) in your desired career field and identify at least five skills you have obtained through your general education courses that will make you successful at this job.

I searched for jobs in my desired field as a Speech Language Pathology Assistant with Career Builder and was unsuccessful in finding any. I did find some using Monster, but I am actually going to be getting a job elsewhere. I have a friend who is also an SLPA and her company is hiring. I plan to be working for them in the next 2 months. I have to obtain 20 CEUs, (continuing education units), and renew my state license before I can start the job.

Five skills that I have obtained from my general education classes are:

Communication skills- while working with students and parents, I will be mindful of their needs. I will also be working closely with a SLP, the general education and special education teachers. It will be important for me to assist them with their lessons and to have good communication with each of them.

Ethical Reasoning- I will be working with a variety of children and their families with all types of cultures and backgrounds, so it is crucial that I treat each child and adult with respect and kindness. I want to celebrate diversity in my classroom and help my students know that being different is ok and that we can all treat each other with respect.

Critical thinking- It will be my responsibility to develop a lesson for my students based on their goals and their ages. I will need to plan for many students, and be prepared with a backup plan if a student is absent and I have to change my lesson at the last minute. I have actually had to this in the past. It will also be important that I fully understand the goals of my students and how to help them achieve them.

Math skills- Collecting data and using it to measure against a student’s prior goal is a vital part of my job description. I must accurately record the student’s progress to determine if they are on track with meeting their goal, or if they need more practice. In putting the data from the sessions. If I do not take accurate notes from the sessions, it will alter the results, which could change their current goals.

Techology skills- I must know how to use the current software systems by my employer because I will be responsible for entering the data into the billing system. There is no room for error while doing this and my information must be correct. It will also be useful to be familiar with certain types of Augmentative and Alternative Communiation (AAC) devices. There different models available, and it takes some practice to help students use them correctly. With support, I can help students make a sentence of a request, or answering a question.

Demonstrate with at least two examples how your newly acquired knowledge and skills have shaped both your personal and professional development.

I feel I have more knowledge after learning from my classes, as well as from working with students of how children behave and can help them succeed. For example, I have worked with many children who have autism and I’ve learned that not every child has the same characteristics, so the way I talk to them and teach them will need to be slightly different. I’ve also learned that each child comes from a different cultural background and upbringing. I think it’s important for teachers to be made aware of the living situations at home for the child, so that if something arises, I will be more equip to work through it.

Describe your plans for putting your education to use within your community.

I would like to show my students and their families that I will work hard to help each child succeed. I think that anyone can teach, but to have a passion for what you do is what makes all the difference. I want the students I work with to feel proud when they finally meet a goal they have worked so hard on. I have witnessed amazing moments like that before and for a couple students in particular, it was as if I was their parent because I was so proud of them. It can sometimes be tedious, working on the same speech sound over and over again. But I will strive to keep my activities engaging to not only keep the lessons interesting, but I will encourage students to do their best while having fun at the same time.
